❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: Is this a degree program or an internship?
This is a research internship, not a degree. You conduct supervised research for 3–6 months and receive a certificate of completion.
Q2: Do I need to find a supervisor before applying?
No. Unlike many research programs, KAUST VSRP does not require you to secure a professor beforehand. You apply through the portal and KAUST matches you with faculty.
Q3: Is the $1,000/month stipend enough for living in Saudi Arabia?
Since housing is free and meals are subsidized on campus, $1,000 covers personal expenses. KAUST campus is self-contained, so you won't need to pay rent or commute. However, it's a modest amount — plan accordingly.
Q4: Can I apply if I'm in my 2nd year of Bachelor's?
No. You must be in your 3rd year or above. This ensures you have sufficient academic background for advanced research.
Q5: Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?
Recommended, but not mandatory. If you don't have valid scores, KAUST will provide a free Duolingo English Test token as an alternative.
Q6: How competitive is this program?
Very competitive. Only 130 interns are accepted annually from 99+ countries. Strong academic records (GPA 3.5+) and a compelling statement of purpose significantly improve your chances.
Q7: Can I extend my internship beyond 6 months?
Extensions are possible in exceptional cases but are not guaranteed. Discuss with your faculty supervisor during the internship.
Q8: Is there an application fee?
No. The KAUST VSRP application is completely free.
